Visiting Researcher, Dr. Martin Atkins, from the University of Waikato, New Zealand

Visiting HSLU-TEVT while on sabbatical leave until mid-January 2024

Dr Martin Atkins is currently visiting HSLU-TEVT while on sabbatical leave until mid-January 2024.

Martin is a Senior Lecturer in Chemical and Process Engineering at the University of Waikato, New Zealand and an Assistant Director of Ahuora – Centre for Smart Energy Systems.

Since arriving in Europe at the start of November he has been busy visiting researchers at

  • TU Wien,
  • University of Maribor,
  • University of Zagreb, and
  • the Sustainable Process Integration Laboratory (SPIL) at Brno University of Technology.

During his time at HSLU, Martin is focusing on collaborative projects centred around process heat decarbonisation.

One of the key outcomes will be the preparation and submission of peer-reviewed research publications, one of which will examine the role of Process Integration in national decarbonisation policies comparing New Zealand, Switzerland, and Australia.

He will also be working on the potential for flexibilisation of process heat for participation in demand response markets. He will also be presenting at the High Temperature Heat Pump symposium in Copenhagen in January 2024.

While Martin and his family may be missing the warm New Zealand summer, they are embracing the unique experience of a Swiss winter with great enthusiasm.
