Lunch-Talk: Decarbonising New Zealand Industry through Process Integration and Renewable Energy Integration

Decarbonising New Zealand Industry through Process Integration and Renewable Energy Integration by Prof Michael Walmsley (University of Waikato)

Time: 12:00 to 12:45 (CET)
Venue: via Zoom

Decarbonising New Zealand Industry through Process Integration and Renewable Energy Integration presentation given by Prof Michael Walmsley (Professor Chemical and Process Engineering, Director of Ahuora Centre for Smart Energy Systems, School of Engineering, University of Waikato, Hamilton, New Zealand)

The industrial process heat sector contributes 28% of New Zealand (NZ) energy-emissions, but represents arguably the most complex and challenging sector to decarbonise economically. Research over many decades has shown that decarbonisation process heat requires highly integrated, productive and efficient energy systems that encompass both the industrial site, including energy storage and local renewables near the factory.

In this presentation a seven-year research programme on process heat decarbonisation commissioned by the NZ government in October 2020 is presented. The research is a multi-university collaboration between three NZ universities (Waikato, Auckland and Massey), led by the University of Waikato. The research aims to develop an Adaptive Energy Digital Twin (AEDT) technology platform underpinned by Process Integration and renewable energy integration advancements. The platform will be available as a web based open source tool to assist industry to re-engineer the way they use, convert, provision and store zero-carbon energy for process heat.

A NZ meat processing case study will be presented to demonstrate the three research aims (RAs) of the project namely; enhanced energy efficiency through Process Integration (RA1), uptake of modular high temperature heat pumps (RA2) and factory and community integration of local renewables (RA3) toward NetZEF. Finally the over arching roll of Energy Digital Twins to help accelerate change will be discussed.
