During an Innocheque study conducted in 2021, the Institute for Sustainable Development (INE) at ZHAW aimed at developing innovative concepts for the financing of decarbonization solutions in the industry.
The idea stems from two current problems. On one hand, access to capital is a challenge for industrial companies wanting to invest in clean energy technologies. On the other hand, institutional investors face increasing pressure to invest into sustainable solutions.
The basic idea of the study was therefore to explore the creation of new, standardized financing instruments creating synergies between these challenges.
Based on stakeholder interviews and workshops, promising concepts were identified based for example on
- tokens,
- blended finance, or
- leasing approaches.
In a follow-up study, these concepts must be concretized and tested in a pilot project.
