Steam is a major heat carrier in the Swiss industry, which is almost exclusively generated using fossil fuels. ln existing plants, its replacement as part of efficiency measures is usually a significant challenge. While steam-generating industrial heat pumps (SGHPs) are on the market, their market uptake is slow due to many unknowns concerning integration, controls, and dynamic behavior. This project will investigate three specific case studies and analyze possible system integrations of open and closed-cycle SGHPs. The aim is to fill the gap between the process integration analysis and the actual implementation. The findings will derive guidelines applicable to many industrial sites in Switzerland and Europe.
