The SPF Institute for Solar Technology at Eastern Switzerland University of Applied Sciences (OST) recently started two new projects integrating large heat storage and renewable energies in district heating networks.
- In BigStoreDH, case studies will be analyzed for the industry partners IWB, EWZ, Wärmeverbund Buttisholz, and energie 360°, focusing on different aspects of replacing fossil fuels with renewables in combination with large thermal storages. Findings are generalized for typical Swiss networks and used by researchers at the Energy Science Center of ETH to model the role of network coupled thermal storages in the future Swiss energy supply.
- The potential of combining large ice storage with low-temperature heating and cooling networks and different renewable sources is examined in the project IceGrid. The developed open-source simulation models are applied to a case study for the industry partner EZL.
These projects are co-financed by the SFOE program "Solar Heat and Heat Storage".
Simulation models and example cases will be used for further analysis in WP03 of DeCarbCH.
